What we don't normally see
A friend recently received a nasty bite from a spider. It sent her to the Emergency Room for treatment. Crazy that something so tiny can cause so much grief - but I'm happy to report that's she's on the mend and hopes to get out of it with only a small scar.
What it did remind me of was one of my mother's favorite factoids: you are never more than 4 feet from a spider anywhere habitable.
It was also a pointed reminder that while I may never be more than 4 feet from a spider at any given time, I also don't see them usually. Sure, I notice them periodically (especially now that they are active for the fall,) but I don't really SEE them every day.
They are essentially invisible to my mind.
I think we have a lot of things like this in our lives, and our businesses.
Things we know are there, but we really don't look.
"Example?", you ask. Okay -
I was speaking with a client today, Ana. She's got a medium sized business and has been running it for years now. She's got more than a few employees, dozens of happy clients - and she has no idea about how much money she's making (or not.) She knows it pays the bills every month.
She's just cruising along and not really looking at the finances because it seems to be working.
Now, she's working with a coach now, so clearly something is wrong - and that is that she's working really hard and just not bringing home the money she would like. She's at the point in her life where she wants something MORE than status quo.
But she's been living her life with her finances just hovering around out of sight. And clearly, with finances lurking on the edge of business, it's getting ready to bite.
It's the first thing she has to address and put her full attention on right now.
Being able to shine the light on her #s is like sweeping out the dangerous spiders that can bite in the middle of the night. Now we can really dig in, find what is happening, and how to make it better.
