But why do I need help?! I should be able to do it on my own.

Hey Reader -

I was running a group Q&A call for a client this week and one of the participants was just really frustrated with herself. She just didn’t feel like she had anything to celebrate - which is, of course, always suspect in my mind.

I won’t go down the “why we celebrate SOMETHING every single day” rabbit hole right now. I’ll save that rant for another day.

Ultimately what this amazing entrepreneur was struggling with was the idea that she’s so amazing at holding everyone else accountable, and supporting everyone else’s dreams, and really great at helping others get clarity about THEIR goals - why can’t she do this for herself?! Why did she need a coach for herself when she operates with such clarity for others?

Such an amazing question. Pretty much everyone else on the call zeroed in and started nodding “YES! I’m right there with you, sister!!”

So why does this entrepreneur, who is running, by all accounts, a successful business that makes over $500k a year, need a coach?

Because we can’t break ourselves out of a box of our own design.

It’s a really rare individual who can really separate themselves (their feelings, past experiences, and thought processes) from what is really happening in order to see the situation from an outside perspective. We’re talking unicorn rare; dragon rare; Excalibur rare. Picture a dragon with a pet unicorn who carries the sword Excalibur - and maybe you get the idea of just how unique this person walking the earth would be.

As humans we have the amazing ability to adapt, change perspective and generally find a new path. What we are not really great at is being able to get ourselves out of mental holes we dig for ourselves.

In the case of this particular person, she had created a “rule” for herself that it was just faster to do certain administrative tasks herself. Well, okay - maybe. Yes, it will take a bit of time to transfer her processes to another person, and even take time out of her day to answer some questions and clarity her problem solving matrix - BUT after that initial time investment, the time she will free up will be amazing to move her business forward.

She’s missing the “opportunity” cost with her time. She just doesn’t understand that she has become the bottle neck in her business, preventing the business from moving into the next level of revenue. If she's doing admin work, she isn't marketing and building relationships with potential clients.

This is where a coach, the mentor, the Board of Directors comes in as critical: where an outside perspective can look at what’s happening and say “hey, this isn’t working!”

The other big factor in utilizing an outside support system is that while we might be great at holding others accountable, we are often quick to give up on ourselves first.

It’s so easy to rationalize, in the moment, “oh, I can just do this later!” with your own to-do list when someone else asks for help. We believe our own BS.

Really successful athletes are known for their “Just Do It” attitude. They are great at doing the hard things; showing up when it’s not easy or a good time; they just push through the resistance. These are amazing humans who don't let themselves believe the BS! It's possible.

They still have coaches.

Coaches help create the plan, can help determine when it needs adjusting, and generally operate as the inspiration to keep moving forward.

Needless to say, at the end of the call, the entrepreneur who was feeling defeated by “needing” a coach was feeling pretty smug by the end of the call that she is proactively choosing the speedy, successful path over the ego-centric hard way.

So, if you find yourself feeling like you are the bottle neck, or things you are doing just aren’t working - then perhaps you need an outside perspective.

Breaking down the boxes -

1:1 Coaching

If you are an entrepreneur who is ready to take your business to the next level or feel like it’s time to uplevel your own CEO skills - spend 30 minutes and create a plan for your next 6 weeks.

I offer a 30 to 45 minute call (not a package, not a series of calls, not an offer for on going coaching... really!) to entrepreneurs who are doing the things but really want to just get clarity and make some amazing progress in the next 4 - 6 weeks. It's a planning session. Simple. Clear. Amazingly powerful.

I do not offer "free" sessions or calls that sound good but are really sales calls.

I have supported hundreds of clients with small businesses make more money, reach successes they previously found elusive, and thrive as a CEO of a business rather than a slave to a job they built for themselves.

  • I don’t believe coaching is about forcing you to do things my way.
  • I do believe that being an entrepreneur is a lonely sport and we all need a team behind us!
  • I am firmly rooted in gratitude, and paired with a solid action plan it’s a powerful tool to reach your goals.
  • I do not think you can just think yourself out of a box you built for yourself.
